11/22/2008— The
Tennessee River Lake Sturgeon Working Group met today to
discuss our activities from the past year and plan for the
next.
-
11/8/2007— We
are hosting the first stand-alone meeting of the Southeastern
Fishes Council, a group dedicated to the study and conservation
of freshwater and coastal fishes of the southeastern United
States.
-
10/4/2007— Phil
Bettoli, from Tennessee Tech, and George Scholten, from
TWRA, released 27 Lake Sturgeon that had sonic tags implanted. We’ll
be watching how these fish move in the river to learn more
about what type of habitat sturgeon use.
-
9/19/2007— The Save
our Sturgeon program just
won an award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for
Significant Achievement in North American Conservation
-
9/10/2007— We
were awarded over $20,000 from the Association of Zoos
and Aquariums through their Conservation Endowment Fund. This
work will support our research on relationships between
genetic diversity and species diversity in Tennessee River
fishes.
-
8/1/2007— Crystal
Harsany, a TNARI intern from UTC, successfully defended
her M.S. thesis about her summer with the sturgeon. Congrats
to Crystal!
-
7/13/2007— Anna
George is presenting a talk entitled “Phylogeography
of the Northern Logperch, Percina caprodes semifasciata” at
the annual meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologists
and Herpetologists in St. Louis, MO.
-
7/2/2007— Anna
George is presenting a talk entitled “The
Delineation of Biological Species in Taxonomy and Phylogenetic
Systematics: An Interesting Paradox Affecting Conservation
Actions” at the annual Society for Conservation Biology
meeting in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
-
6/7/2007— Over
500 Lake Sturgeon, ranging in age from 2-9 years, were released
into the French Broad River today.
-
6/4/2007— Lee
Friedlander joined TNARI as a Research Associate.
- 1/23/2007
—
The Lake Sturgeon Reintroduction partnership, including representatives
from TWRA, TVA, USFWS, WWF, and TNARI, met in Knoxville Jan.
23-24 for our annual meeting and monitoring effort. We had six
boats on the river to set trotlines overnight and were successful
in catching one Lake Sturgeon from Fort Loudon Reservoir, which
marks the first time we have caught one during our annual meeting
(our reports on the sturgeon primarily come from commercial
fishermen). The fish was from the 2001 year class (we could
tell because they are marked by removing a particular scute
each year), but was very small—only 20 inches and 1.4
pounds. However, despite the slower growth, we’re very
happy he’s still swimming around 6 years later!

Another successful release —
1800 Lake Sturgeon were released into the French Broad River
today, with the help of the 5th graders from Gap Creek.
- 10/12/2006
—
The Gap Creek 5th graders came to visit the Tennessee Aquarium
today and got to pet some of Shimmy’s cousins at the Lake
Sturgeon touch tank!
- 10/3/2006
—
The 5th graders at Gap Creek Elementary School welcomed their
latest student into the classroom today—a 12” Lake
Sturgeon born in 2005. They named him Shimmy because of the
way he wiggles in the water.
- 9/25/2006
—
Our project with Gap Creek Elementary School began today with
a visit to TNARI by the teacher and Aquarium educators.
- 6/16/2006
— Received 1,900 baby sturgeon from the Warm Springs Fish
Hatchery. They’re doing great.
- 6/13/2006
and 6/14/2006 — Another successful lake sturgeon
release! It was filmed by the crew of Tennessee
Wildside, as well as Nick
Caloyianis Productions for a sturgeon documentary. Read
all about the fun here.
- 6/7/2006
— Received funding from the EPA
for our Sturgeon Education Project. TNARI staff and Tennessee
Aquarium Educators will be working with Gap Creek Elementary
School in Knoxville on a program about rivers, watersheds, and
conservation of the lake sturgeon.
- 6/1/2006
— TNARI welcomes Dr. Anna
George as the new director.
